Quick Take: 2026 Subaru Outback Premium

EV Rider reviewer Dan Scanlan takes a test drive in a 2026 Subaru Outback Premium, its seventh generation gaining a more SUV-like demeanor.

There’s boxy bumpers, a squared-off profile and serious body cladding, plus functionally blocky roof bars. It rides 8-plus inches off the ground atop chunky Dunlop Grand Trek rubber, looking capable of off-roading.

Inside, a pair of foot-wide digital screens – and a few needed buttons. Rubber floor mats to catch mud are underfoot, while you and three other adults nestle in softly supportive Star Tex pseudo-leather seats. There’s wireless Apple Car Play and Android Auto, a decent audio system, and voice command for lots of functions. Along with a big cargo area, there’s a naturally-aspirated 2.5-liter BOXER (flat) four with 180 hp, a Lineartronic CVT with 8-speed manual mode function, all-wheel-drive and an X-MODE mud and snow option – it can tackle off-road.
