Jacksonville Car Culture events calendar

The next Caffeine &Octane is set for 8 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 14th, at The Avenues mall at 10300 Southside Blvd.

This month, it is the “Creepy Cruisers” edition – dress up your ride Halloween style (costumed drivers and passengers equally welcome). C&O will showcase a few of its favorites in the Feature Area!

Cars should start arriving by 7 a.m. for this second-Saturday-of-each-month C&O from the Southside Boulevard side of the shopping mall, the best way in through Malabar Boulevard.

And all EVs, and those interested in them are invited to…

… the JEA, EV Rider and North Florida Clean Fuels Coalition sponsor the Drive Electric North Florida display this month at C&O.

A racing prototype version of the Aston Martin Valkyrie will take on the challenge for overall victory in 2025’s 24 Hours of Le Mans, with championship-winning endurance racing partner Heart of Racing competing in at least one Valkyrie in the top Hypercar class of each of the FIA World Endurance Championship [WEC] and the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championships [IMSA]. This means that the prototype Valkyrie will participate in sportscar racing’s most prestigious events; Le Mans, and Florida’s Rolex 24 at Daytona and 12 Hours of Sebring.

Lawrence Stroll, Executive Chairman of Aston Martin Lagonda, said: performance is the “lifeblood of everything that we do at Aston Martin, and motorsport is the ultimate expression of this pursuit of excellence.”

“We have been present at Le Mans since the earliest days,” he says. “And through those glorious endeavors, we succeeded in winning Le Mans in 1959 and our class 19 times over the past 95 years. Now we return to the scene of those first triumphs aiming to write new history with a racing prototype inspired by the fastest production car Aston Martin has ever built.”

The brand has clinched no less than 19 class victories at Le Mans, including overall triumph in the 1959 race with the iconic DBR1 driven by Roy Salvadori (GBR) and Carroll Shelby (USA). In total, more than 240 drivers have raced Aston Martins at Le Mans over the past 95 years in 27 different chassis and engine combinations, through virtually every era.

The race-optimized carbon-fiber chassised Valkyrie will use a modified version of the Cosworth-built 6.5-litre naturally aspirated V-12, which in standard form revs to 11,000rpm and develops over 1,000 hp. As with the Valkyrie AMR Pro track-car, the battery-electric hybrid system that features on the road-specification Valkyrie is absent from the race car.

The Amelia concours d’elegance returns for its 29th iteration from Feb. 29 to March 3 of 2024. And the Broad Arrow Amelia Auction will return as the official auction of The Amelia for 2024. The Amelia Auction will be extended to two days for 2024 (February 29 – March 1) following a successful inaugural event that saw $31 million in total sales and 81 percent of all lots sold. Did you have one as a kid?

There’s now a full-size version of that favorite 1980s radio-controlled Tamiya offroad buggy, made by the folks at The Little Car Company.

Called the Tamiya Wild One MAXit’s got a 14.4 kWh battery pack and rear-mounted electric motor with 38 hp – that’s a 62-mph top speed and 160-mile range on adjustable Bilstein dampers, 14-inch Maxxis Bighorn rear tires and just over 1,000 pounds.

Price tag – about $45,000.

In celebration of its 110th anniversary Aston Martin reveals Valour, an ultra-exclusive V-12 special edition built to honor the marque’s long tradition of front-engined sports cars. It is available with a manual transmission, production limited to just 110 cars globally with a twin-turbocharged 5.2-litre V-12. It has a bespoke suspension with adaptive dampers, springs and anti-roll bars in a custom body structure featuring front and rear shear panels, a rear suspension tower strut brace and fuel tank bracing. Hemmings Great Race presented by Coker Tire: A 40-year tradition, cars built pre-1970’s launch on a time-speed-distance rally across America. Fan can see the cars over three days – Thursday is Tech Inspection Day at World Golf Village. Then on Friday from noon to 3 p.m., a practice rally followed by lunch at the Classic Car Museum of St. Augustine. Then from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday, the 100-plus classics will begin parking ahead of the rally, one by one, at Francis Field in St. Augustine. They head out one by one starting at 11 a.m., ending eight days later – July 2 – in Pueblo, Colo., with Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, Arkansas, Mississippi, Missouri and Kansas in between.

The 101st running of the famed Race to the Clouds, an invitational automobile hill climb to the summit of Pikes Peak, is set for Sunday.

And David Donohue, driving the Brumos Racing Porsche GT2 RS ClubSport, clocked a new TA1 qualifying record earlier this week, breaking his own record from last year. There are 66 drivers entered for this year’s race.

And legendary Brumos Racing driver Hurley Haywood will be Pikes Peak Hill Climb grand marshal this year.

If that Brumos news isn’t cool enough, how about a Ford van?

But not just any van – how about an electric Ford SuperVan 4.2 with motorsports legend Romain Dumas at the wheel in his eighth appearance at the event. Specifically designed to conquer America’s mountain and showcase the extreme limits of electric power, Ford said the van underwent a complete aerodynamic redesign – over 4,400 pounds of downforce at 150 mph.

There’s three STARD UHP 6-phase motors and STARD’s Ultra High Performance Li-Polymer NMC pouch cells, one motor powering the front and two in the rear for more than 1,050 kW (1,400 hp).  There’s a revised regenerative braking system with carbon ceramic brake discs, magnesium forged wheels wrapped in Pirelli P Zero race tires and a minimalist race interior.

The Amelia concours d’elegance returns for its 29th iteration from Feb. 29 to March 3 of 2024. And the Broad Arrow Amelia Auction will return as the official auction of The Amelia for 2024. The Amelia Auction will be extended to two days for 2024 (February 29 – March 1) following a successful inaugural event that saw $31 million in total sales and 81 percent of all lots sold. Cars should start arriving by 7 a.m. for the second Saturday C&O from the Southside Boulevard side of the shopping mall, the best way in through Malabar Boulevard. As always, there will be a Porsche Jacksonville corner, an MBCA Southern Stars section, exotics area, Classics Rows and more at each C&O. The Amelia concours d’elegance returns for its 29th iteration from Feb. 29 to March 3 of 2024. And the Broad Arrow Amelia Auction will return as the official auction of The Amelia for 2024. The Amelia Auction will be extended to two days for 2024 (February 29 – March 1) following a successful inaugural event that saw $31 million in total sales and 81 percent of all lots sold. You’ve heard of the Boss Mustang, and maybe Boss Hog – how about The Boss’s Chevelle?

The 1969 Chevrolet Chevelle Convertible once owned by The Boss himself – Bruce Springsteen – goes on the block during Mecum’s Auction at the Indiana State Fairgrounds May 12 to 20. The Chevelle, one of 3,000 up for auction, now presents in the configuration described by Springsteen in his hit song “Racing in the Streets,” which appeared on his 1978 hit album “Darkness on the Edge of Town.”

A notable exception, Mecums says, is found in the fact that the song describes the engine as “a 396 [with] Fuelie heads.” Chevelle fans know that’s an incompatible combination.

Sales estimate – $150,000 to $200,000.

It does have a 396 CI V-8 with 4-speed manual with Hurst shifter, done in Le Mans Blue with white interior.

It was owned by Bruce Springsteen from 1981 until 1987, when it was gifted to Toby Scott, who worked as a recording engineer or mixer on over 18 of his albums. It was rotisserie restored between 1988 and 2020, putting the car into the condition described in the lyrics of Springsteen’s song “Racing in the Streets.” Delivered to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, it was displayed with the surfboard that Bruce would put in the back when going to the beach in New Jersey. There’s a signed letter from Bruce regarding his ownership of the car, a document from Bruce’s mechanic describing acquiring the car for Bruce and a picture of the license plate the car wore when registered to Bruce.

Caffeine and Octane

The latest one marked the one year anniversary of the renaming of this long-running event as Caffeine and Octane Jacksonville, after it spanned multiple venues including the Town Center and the former Times-Union building.

The July 9th anniversary event featured hundreds of cool cars of all classes from YoungTimers and exotics to classic trucks and the featured class – convertibles.

The next Caffeine and Octane Jacksonville is from 8 to 11 a.m. on Saturday August 13, at The Avenues mall’s Southside Boulevard parking lots.

An estimated 1,000-plus cars, trucks, motorcycles and more come to the all-makes, all-models free show, with all parking spots first come/first serve. Cars should start arriving by 7 a.m. each Saturday to the Southside Boulevard side of the shopping mall, the best way in through Malabar Boulevard. As always, there will be a Porsche section, and an exotics area at the August C&O. And look for literally hundreds of vintage and classic cars, muscle cars and so much more.

Benefit motorcycle ride:

A police-escorted Hometown Hero’s Ride will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 23, starting and ending at Adamec Harley-Davidson of St. Augustine at 380 Outlet Mall Blvd. Registration is from 8:30 to 10 a.m., $25 per bike; the first 300 registered bikes include a ride t-shirt.

The ride benefits Builders Care, a faith-based nonprofit of Northeast Florida Builders Association, to fund the construction needs of local first responders and military vets. The ride will honor retired Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office Motorman Lonnie Mills, recently paralyzed from the waist down when he was rear-ended in a March 10 accident.

Food trucks, vendors, live music and raffles will also be on-site, but no vehicles like Slingshots or T-REX can ride.

An Evening With Brumos is a social gathering set for 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 5, at The Brumos Collection at 5959 San Pablo Road S. in

Jacksonville:

Jacksonville’s only automobile museum has cars from the Brumos Racing team’s past, plus historic Indy racers and classics in a 35,000-square-foot museum guarded by a big orange Union 76 ball once used by spotters at Daytona International Speedway. The brick building’s design hearkens back to the 1920s Ford Model A plant under the Mathews Bridge.

Owned by Dan Davis, once majority owner of the Brumos Porsche, Mercedes-Benz and Lexus dealerships before it was sold to Fields Automotive a few years back, the collection was built up by him and the late Bob Snodgrass, president of Brumos Racing and the dealerships.

Tickets are $29.59 each, and include to the collection and a workshop open house with technical staff available for questions, as well as two drink tickets per guest for brews from Intuition Ale Works, wine, soft drinks or water.

The event is for guests 21 and older, IDs needed for alcohol consumption. No drinks are available beyond the two complimentary drinks.

Automotive Hall of Fame inductee, former General Motors Vice President of Global Design and a regular at The Amelia, Ed Welburn, will serve as honoree at the inaugural Detroit Concours d’Elegance on Sept. 16- to 18.

“When selecting an honoree for the all-new Detroit Concours, there was only one choice, Ed Welburn,” Hagerty CEO McKeel Hagerty said. “Ed’s impact on the automotive industry and his connection to the Detroit Institute of Arts is without equal. I can’t imagine celebrating car culture in the Motor City without honoring him.”

“I’m excited about the Hagerty team’s forward-thinking idea to stage a concours in the cultural center of Detroit, a city with a rich automotive history and the heart of the future of the automobile,” Welburn added.

Welburn started drawing cars at the age of two, and had decided on a career in automotive design by the time he was eight. His mission took on greater meaning when he wrote his first letter to General Motors at the age of 11. The company would write back with next step recommendations. He studied design, sculpture and painting at Howard University’s School of Fine Arts. He continued his communication with General Motors at Howard, which led to an GM Design internship after his junior year in 1971. One year later, Welburn became the first African American hired to design GM vehicles.

In 2003, Welburn was named GM vice president of design, the sixth person to lead the department in the company’s history, then became the first person to lead GM Design globally a few years later, overseeing more than 1,400 designers working in 11 design centers in seven countries.

In 2017, Welburn was awarded an honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts by the College for Creative Studies, and inducted into the Automotive Hall of Fame. In 2018, he received the Eyes On Design Lifetime Design Achievement award and, in 2021, a Lifetime Achievement award from Robb Report. In 2019, Ed founded Welburn Media Productions, where he serves as CEO and as a producer on a major movie project about the story of African American race car drivers in the 1920s and 1930s.

Big news – TV’s Caffeine and Octane takes alook at The Amelia’s Cars & Community program from March, including the expanded Cars & Caffeine…so watchThe Amelia on Motortrend TV at 10:30 a.m. this Saturday.

Then….drop your tops and slap on some sunscreen as the next Caffeine and Octane Jacksonville rumbles into life from 8 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 9, at The Avenues mall’s Southside Boulevard parking lots. This month, it highlights convertibles.

An estimated 1,000-plus cars, trucks, motorcycles and more usually come to the all-makes, all-models free show, with all parking spots first come/first serve. Cars should start arriving by 7 a.m. that June 11 Saturday to the Southside Boulevard side of the shopping mall, the best way in through Malabar Boulevard. As always, there will be a Porsche section, and an exotics area at the July C&O. And look for literally hundreds of vintage and classic cars, muscle cars and so much more.

The Sendy Club’s Wolf set the fastest time with driver Robin Shute, winning overall with a time of 10:09.525.

Happy birthday Alfa:

Alfa Romeo’s 112th birthday was celebrated with a snarl on June 24 in its historic birthplace, as its single-seat Formula 1 racer screamed through  the streets of downtown Milan, starting from Piazza Duomo and passing through Piazza San Babila, Porta Nuova, Central Station, the City Life district and ending at Gattamelata. In 1910, Alfa’s first production site was at the Portello, the brand’s new flagship store.

The company was born A.L.F.A – Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili.

At the wheel, Alfa Romeo F1 Team driver Valtteri Bottas, the Finnish driver is in eighth place in the drivers’ standings.

Father’s Day weekend Car Shows:

CaddyShack Vettes at the Village: The 21st Father’s Day weekend Corvette show saw 176 fab fiberglass fantastics registered for the show last Saturday at World Golf Village at 1 World Golf Place in St. Augustine.

There was a 1955 Corvette with 265-cu.in. V-8, 2-speed Power Glide transmission, signal-seeking AM radio and more – original price – $3,389.

The show was free for spectators and $45 for show cars, every generation of Corvette on display, with proceeds benefitting Wolfson Children’s Hospital.

Summer Volksfest – The sound of air-cooled flat fours and more sounded off last Saturday at the Car Museum of St. Augustine’s annual Volkswagen show.

How about a 1992 Volkswagen Beetle taxicab from Brazil?

Locally-owned, Brazilian-built Volkswagen Beetle-based sports coupe called – the Puma – beautifully restored and pristine.

And this is a 1974 Beetle EV – five Tesla battery modules, a NetGain Hyper9 electric motor, and Prius/WRX electric throttle pedal.

The show was at the museum at 4730 U.S. 1 S./Dixie Highway South in St Augustine.

Toasty is the word for last Saturday’s C&O as hot, sunny skies gave way to clouds, but no rain until its end. So variety was the spice of life at C&O again.

Jeeps were the featured ride at the event, everything from classic World War II units in Army green, to modern rock climbers.

And here’s a sample…just a sample…of some of the rest of the ride.

And then there was this sleek, aerodynamic coupe with its 2-liter Ford EcoTec turbocharged four mounted behind the spare cockpit, clothed in a handmade body with serious ground effects, a soon-to-be ground-hugging splitter, and the name of Alula. Those are handmade curved taillights as well, with a nose-mounted radiator that cools the engine as air rushes up through it and over the body. Can’t wait to see its completion.

Those of you who went to the 27th outing of The Amelia concours d’elegance this past March may have spotted the familiar cowboy-hatted figure of Jim Glickenhaus helping his crew dry the morning dew off his 1966 Ferrari P3/4. In previous years, you may have seen some of the New York hypercar maker’s other cars, like his outrageous SCG Boot, a modern high-performance homage to the Steve McQueen Baja Boot, off-road racing truck, which happened told be parked nearby.

But for those who watched any of last weekend’s 90th anniversary 24 Hours of Le Mans, Scuderia Cameron Glickenhaus’ SCG 007 Le Mans Hypercar was one of the highlights of a nail-biting endurance race. The team’s cars finished third and fourth, right behind the Toyota hypercars and their repeat win at the 90th running of the race.

One of the two SGC 007’s had to be repaired, falling behind before coming back to finish fourth.

Maybe the winner shows up at the 28th running of The Amelia?
