Nilu27

Here’s an example of automotive spaghetti – the NILU hypercar’s “Hot V” engine with its 12 swirling exhaust pipes is alive, according to its makers at Nilu27. Founders Sasha and Inna Selipanov recently traveled to New Zealand to witness the brand new V-12 engine fired for the first time.

The milestone took place on , June 17,  marking a first run for the highly anticipated power unit. Developed in close collaboration with specialized high-performance engine developers Hartley Engines, the power unit is a masterclass in traditional internal combustion engineering.

It features a unique “Hot V” configuration – with the exhaust headers placed between the cylinder heads to optimize both performance and packaging. And while the engine was originally projected to produce 1,070 horsepower, initial dyno testing has already exceeded those projections, while reaching a spine-tingling 11,000 RPM redline.

Nilu27
“This is the moment theory became reality,” said Sasha Selipanov, Founder of Nilu27. “By firing-up this stunning V12 we didn’t only prove our engineering capabilities, we delivered the soul of the NILU. As most of the automotive world embraces digital and electric sterility, we’ve doubled down on the raw, visceral drama of high RPM, naturally aspirated internal combustion. The Nilu27/Hartley V12 will make our hypercar truly timeless. And we hope the video from our first dyno test will generate the same excitement among viewers as it did when we were present.”

Nilu27
Nelson Hartley from Hartley Engines, echoed the excitement from the workshop floor in New Zealan.

“To see this bespoke V12 come to life after months of intense development is an indescribable feeling. This isn’t just an engine; it’s a piece of art that pushes the boundaries of what a naturally aspirated power unit can do. We knew we had something special on paper, but seeing it outperform expectations on the dyno right out of the gate is phenomenal.”

The naturally aspirated  6.5-liter, 12-cylinder engine has an 80-degree bank angle….and those who drive it will have a 7-speed manual. Following further testing, final calibration and refinement cycles in New Zealand, the V-12 engine will soon leave Palmerston North for the Nilu27 R&D and production facilities in Lahr, Germany. Once there, it will be integrated into the company’s first driving prototype.

Photos – Morgan Motor Company

Britain’s venerable Morgan Motor Company has a new car – but there’s only nine to be built, and sadly, it looks like none of the Midsummer coupe will be coming to the U.S.

The design has billet aluminum A-pillars, with a windshield bonded directly to its structure. Inside, cream leather with teak wood inlays and real aluminum. Under its bonnet, BMW’s turbocharged 3-liter inline-6 paired to an 8-speed automatic.

“Midsummer Coupé began with a conversation,” said Morgan Managing Director Matthew Hole. “A client came to us with an idea and, rather than asking how closely we could meet that brief, we asked ourselves how far we could take it.”

The introduction of a fixed-head architecture allowed Morgan’s designers to rethink the vehicle’s proportions, the roofline flowing seamlessly into the rear bodywork. The ash body frame forms part of the load-bearing architecture, helping transfer loads through the structure whilst also providing natural acoustic benefits.

No price tag announced – and no mention of it on Morgan’s U.S. website.

Atkinson was instrumental during the Brumos glory years in the 1970s, and will take guests behind the scenes of the title-winning season, as well as the restoration that returned the car to its original Brumos Racing configuration.

Once returned to its original glory, the 934.5 was shown at many concours through the years. Now, it’s coming home to join many other famous Brumos racing machines on display at the museum at 5159 San Pablo Road S. for a short time only – and this event.

Wait – there’s more:

Ram/Stellantis

Yes, Hellcat Challenger and Chargers are gone – but Dodge has a new HEMI in the wings to combat the Ford F-150 Lobo muscle truck. It is called the 2027 Ram 1500 Rumble Bee, a new lineup of V8-powered “muscle trucks” designed to bring back the kind of performance pickups that disappeared 20 years ago. That’s when Ram discontinued production of the 8.4-liter V-10, 500-hp SRT10 “Viper truck

Ram/Stellantis

RAM CEO Tim Kuniskis unveiled them in a video –  yes indeed, a whole lineup of V-8 trucks that begins with a 395-hp/5.7-liter HEMI V-8, moving up to a 470-hp 6.4-liter 392 HEMI, and topping out with (seen above) a supercharged 6.2-liter Hellcat V-8 making 777 hp in the Rumble Bee SRT. Ram says the flagship can hit 60 mph in 3.4 seconds and run an 11.6-second quarter mile, which puts it in serious performance car territory.

Ram/Stellantis

Along with 22- inch wheels, it’ll have Brembo brakes, launch control, adaptive dampers, and a dedicated rear-wheel-drive mode, plus aero-aids like a front splitter, rear spoiler, and underbody aero shielding to keep the truck stable at its claimed 170-mph top speed.

Ferrari

Ferrari has unveiled its first dedicated electric vehicle – the 4-door/5-passenger Luce.

The first-ever Ferrari EV marks the culmination of Maranello’s multi-energy strategy, electrification “just one of the means available to expand its design potential in product architecture, performance, design, and driving experience, without replacing existing engines,” the Italian automaker says.

Ferrari

The design was entrusted to LoveFrom, the design collective led by Sir Jony Ive and Marc Newson and outside the Ferrari Design Studio. That led to a new perspective and cross-fertilisation, enabling a new design language to be introduced.
The Luce weighs just under 5,000 pounds, and can hit 60 mph in about 2.5 seconds, with a top speed of 192 mph, Ferrari says. The powertrain comprises four F80-derived permanent magnet synchronous engines with radial flux, delivering a maximum speed of 30,000 rpm at the front and 25,500 rpm at the rear. The system operates on 800 V architecture and combines performance with efficiency, with solutions directly derived from motorsport. The high-voltage battery pack was designed, validated, and built in Maranello and comprises 210 cells in series that deliver 122 kWh and support fast charging up to 350 kW. It is designed as a structural element of the car. Power electronics feature compact inverters and a DC/DC resonant converter for the active suspension to achieve record-breaking efficiency of more than 98%.

Ferrari

Inside, still some real mechanical buttons, dials, toggles and switches combined with multifunctional digital displays developed with Samsung Display. And interior materials are honest and pure, Ferrari says – recycled anodized aluminum, Corning Gorilla Glass and premium leather, with a 21-speaker/24 channel audio system. This EV exotic is expected to start at $640,000  or more, deliveries expected to start in Europe in late 2026 and in the US in the second quarter of 2027.

Lotus has announced a new hybrid V-8 sports car called the Focus 2030 – could this be a new Esprit, the iconic four-, the eight-cylinder powered supercar of the 1970s through 1990s?

Qingfeng Feng, CEO, Lotus Group, said Lotus was born from the rebellious spirit of Colin Chapman, and that is not lost today.

“Focus 2030 will reset both the brand and the business to keep us true to our DNA,” he said in the release on the new cars – not called Esprit. “We are obsessed with engineering, obsessed with performance and obsessed with building drivers’ cars, and that is what will grow this business.”

Focus 2030’s design and engineering are rooted in England, home of the brand’s identity and motorsport expertise, with R&D in China to deliver rapid scale to market. Codenamed the Type 135, the new car is planned for 2028 – all-new, with a V-8 hybrid powertrain, with over 980 hp. It is expected to be manufactured in Europe, further details of the car to be announced later this year.

Go as fast as possible without spending more than $2000? Impossible?

Grassroots Motorsports
Gainesville Raceway once again hosted last weekend’s Grassroots Motorsports $2000 Challenge presented by Tire Rack. That is where teams race their $2,000 or less creations in autocross, and the track’s quarter-mile dragstrip. Oh yes – they have to impress judges during a concours-style show.

The overall winner, seen above, may look like a VW Beetle. But Derek Penner brought an improved version of an already-wild Mazda Miata with a Fahrvergnugen skin – it won the top trophy and a $1,000 gift card from Tire Rack.
Overall results:

  • 1st Overall – Biggest trophy and a $1000 Tire Rack gift card: Derek Penner, 1970 Volkswagen Beetle
  • 2nd Overall – Bigger trophy and a $500 Tire Rack gift card: Wreck Racing, 1986 Dodge Conquest TSi
  • 3rd Overall – Big trophy and $250 Tire Rack gift card: Jonathan Whitaker, 2001 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28
  • GTN$ Winner – Trophy and a $250 Grassroots Motorsports Store gift card: Colin Sorensen, 2004 Mazda RX-8
  • GTW$ Winner – Trophy and a $250 Grassroots Motorsports Store gift card: Rob Rabenstein, 2004 Mazda RX-8
  • GTU$ Winner – Trophy and a $250 Grassroots Motorsports Store gift card: Derek Penner, 1970 Volkswagen Beetle
