Jacksonville Car Culture events calendar

Happy Holidays edition!

Caffeine and Octane Jacksonville: It’s 8 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 8 at The Avenues mall’s south side at 10300 Southside Blvd. Cars should start arriving by 7 a.m., the best way in through Malabar Boulevard off Southside Boulevard.

Next month, we highlight Classic Japanese Vehicles in a special display within the Central Lot.

Submit your ride for consideration here to join the estimated 1,000-plus cars, trucks and more at the free cruise-in. Caffeine and Octane Jacksonville is an all makes, all models show, and remember – parking spots are first come/first serve.

As always, there will be a Porsche section, and an exotics area, as well as hundreds of vintage and classic cars, muscle cars and so much more.

The Amelia Concours d’Elegance: Watch this website – https://www.ameliaconcours.com – as tickets for The 27th annual Amelia, set for Thursday, March 3 through Sunday, March 6, go on sale in January.

Events now listed on the website include: Saturday’s Cars & Community, a celebration of the automobile featuring more than 300 vehicles on the same show field used for Sunday’s Concours d’Elegance; and a NASCAR Saturday Seminar hosted by Ray Evernham. The RM Sotheby’s auction, as well as the annual Silent Auction, will both be back in 2022.

More information on how to reserve spots for those events, as well as many others, is coming.

Honda will inspire young people to follow their dreams with its “Believe and Achieve!” float as it leads the 133rd Rose Parade at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 1 on ABC and NBC. And a Snapchat filter will enable viewers to build a virtual jet pack to fly over the parade route as a 2022 Acura NSX Type S and 2022 Honda Passport TrailSport (sound vehicle) serve as official parade vehicles as Honda celebrates its 12th years as a presenting sponsor.

The float will have four Honda women associates aboard as it celebrates science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM) education by depicting a young girl whose dreams have taken flight with a rocket pack she designed and built through her own efforts, ingenuity and passion. Sue Bai is a chief engineer and division director at Honda Research Institute in Ann Arbor, Mich.; Nicole Harvel is an engineering coordinator and lead material engineer of the Material Analysis Lab at Honda`s manufacturing plant in Timmonsville, S.C.; Melanie Morimoto is asenior fabricator at American Honda in Torrance, Calif.; and Yolanda Pate is the quality division lead for Honda`s Alabama Auto Plant in Lincoln, Ala.

Jacksonville’s Bill Warner donated his 93-year-old No. 88 Simplex Piston Ring Special, built and raced back then by Bert Moyers, to the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America at 1801 W. International Speedway Blvd. in Daytona Beach.

Believed to be the last surviving race car of its kind, the car was built by Moyers in Jacksonville using a 1928 Chevrolet engine and brakes, a 1926 rear axle from the same maker, and a 1927 Whippet radiator, all atop a shortened, narrowed 1927 Essex frame. Moyers campaigned it on beach courses from Jacksonville to Daytona Beach as well as a track at what is Jacksonville Naval Air Station.

Warner, founder and chairman emeritus of The Amelia Concours d’Elegance, found the car partially restored in 2006 in a Jacksonville garage where Moyer’s son had begun restoration. He and others restored the car, unveiling it to the Moyers family at the 2007 Amelia Concours. Now he has donated it to the Hall of Fame at Daytona International Speedway.

“This car, well, it’s not something I can push a button and drive,” Warner said at the museum, according to a Facebook post. “I’m on the MSHFA Board of Directors. I’m 78 years old. If I died tomorrow, my family wouldn’t know what to do with this jewel. I felt like it had to go somewhere where it would be appreciated and tell a story. It was natural that it would come here. It’s here next to the Richard Petty (stock) car, the Mickey Thompson truck and Bob Tullius’ prototype sports car. It’s in a place with cars it belongs with. I’m glad this car has a really good home. It gives the public a chance to see exactly what racing was like back in those days.”

The Florida Times-Union documented the race cars’ discovery, restoration and reintroduction to the Pablo Beach sands it used to race on in a 2009 story.

Lotus has released a new film of the Lotus Emira in action, showing the V-6 First Edition being put through its paces by Gavan Kershaw on the iconic Hethel test track.

Kershaw, the director of attributes and product integrity at Lotus Cars, leads the dynamic development of their products. Amid some sideways action at Hethel, he explains the Emira’s performance on both the track and the road on the video.

“With the 3.5-liter V-6 configuration and the supercharger, you start an acceleration from as low as 1,500 rpm,” he said. “The car just pulls and pulls and pulls, getting stronger and stronger as the revs increase. This is what a real sports car feels like.”

The video also allows Kershaw to expand on the car’s driving performance, and four different driving modes – Tour, for maximum stability and control; Sport, for increased body slip and throttle response; Race, with even greater motorsport-derived dynamics and a revised instrument cluster; and Fully Off, where the stability control is completely disengaged.

Jacksonville Car Culture events calendar

Jacksonville Car Culture Jekyll Island Holiday Lights Tour: Friday and Saturday, December 3 and 4.

The event begins at 5:30 p.m. on that Friday with a cruise up to Jekyll Island, departing from the River City Marketplace at 13221 City Center Blvd. starts at 5:30pm. The ride heads to Jekyll Island, Ga. to cruise among the holiday lights, then a one-night stay one night at the Courtyard Jekyll Island or Residence Inn Jekyll Island. Jekyll Island boasts more than 500,000 holiday lights, with more 35,000 on a great tree alone. The cruise is limited to 50 vehicles and will include a stop along the way, an outdoor patio reception at the Courtyard Jekyll Island.

Cost: $100 per vehicle plus hotel room, fees and taxes. Additional passengers are $20 per person. One night at Courtyard Jekyll Island or Residence Inn Jekyll Island is $159 plus fees/taxes. It includes two beverage tickets per vehicle for the patio reception at the hotel at the conclusion of the cruise on Friday night; digital photo of your vehicle by Deremer Studios; and exclusive 8 to 10 a.m. Saturday Caffeine and Octane for cruise entrants – entrants are asked to please bring an unwrapped toy for Toys for Tots.

Ponte Vedra Auto Show: The 2021 Ponte Vedra Auto Show returned last Sunday under the direction of Justin Felker and St. Augustine’s Art ‘n Motion with almost 300 cars and trucks on show at the event field at 245 Nocatee Center Way in Ponte Vedra Beach, and it is free and open to any classic or modern sports car, motorcycle or specialty/exotic.

The Best in Show was a silver Mercedes-Benz 190SL roadster owned by   Sam Joiner.

The Classic European class winner – a blue Mercedes-Benz 280SE owned by Don Glisson.

The Best of Europe was a Mercedes-Benz SL 63 owned by David Wommer; the Jeep vs. Bronco Class was a CJ5 owned by Laura Geisel.

The Viper Class winner was Ben Bobbitt’s, parked next to a rare Brazilian-built Puma GTE sports car.

The American Classic class winner was Mark Becker’s Chrysler Town and Country Convertible.

The Most Super Supra was Loi Tran’s Toyota Supra, while the Pre-War Vintage class winner is a Cadillac Model 60 Convertible Coupe owned by Gregg Romero, and the Asian Excellence winner was a pristine white Toyota Crown owned by Alan Dickerson. The Classic Corvette class winner was owned by Ronnie Edge, while the Classic Porsche class winner was a Porsche 356SC   owned by Lew Bednarczuk.

The Most Original class winner was the  Jaguar D Type owned by Andre Desmarais, as seen behind this larger Jag.

And possibly the most amazing creation an actual street-legal 2001 Reynard IndyCar, which shot foot-long flames when revved as it entered the show field, painted in its original Visteon livery. Note the headlights, Mickey Thompson treaded tires for crucial ground clearance, and a taillight assembly in back, a stock block V-8 in place of the original’s Toyota race engine. Mariz Automobili just posted a video on the car as it left the show and hit the road at night, as filmed with a wicked BMW camera car also at the show, and edited by Fastrmedia @fastrmedia.

This was its second appearance that weekend for the IndyCar, having wowed crowds, and Caffeine and Octane Jacksonville chief honcho Chris Brewer, when it cruised in the day before at The Avenues.

And if that’s not enough, a 1966 Batmobile replica from St. Augustine – to the Bat Cave!

The show is held in association with the St. Johns County Chamber of Commerce and the St. Johns County Tourism Development Council.

Nitro Rallycross at The FIRM: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 4 and 5, at the Florida International Rally & Motorsport Park at 7266 Airport Rd, Starke. Teams with drivers like Tanner Foust and Travis Pastrana will race on steep berms, banked turns and 100-ft gap jumps at the track. Two-day standing room general admission – $36 each. Pearl Harbor Commemoration: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 4, at The Military Museum of North Florida at 1 Bunker Ave, Green Cove Springs, off Florida 16. The event begins with a ceremony, plus car show, re-enactors and a military collector show.

Toys for Tots car show: 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday Dec. 11, at Golden Isle Church of God, 20 Boswell Lane in Brunswick, Ga. Free for spectators and $20 per show vehicle, or a new unwrapped toy. Donations go to the area Toys for Tots program.

Toys 4 Tots Car and Truck Show: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 12, at the WW Ranch Motorcross Park, 1439 Otis Road in Jacksonville. Spectators are asked to bring a canned good or donation for the needy, while show vehicle registration is $20. Live music from Beau and The Burners, sponsored by the Callahan Cruisers.

Maserati showed off its new Grecale on Tuesday by arranging its 80 prototypes in the shape of the company’s famed logo, a trident, in a record-breaking shot. The outline was 328 feet long. Maserati says it has more than 250 development models distributed across Japan and the United States, United Arab Emirates and China, Finland and Italy.

The Grecale is a compact SUV due to be released this spring, its name derived a Mediterranean wind, which is a Maserati tradition, It slots below the Levante, sharing its platform with the Alfa Romeo Stelvio crossover. The Grecale was originally set to be unveiled officially this week, but supply chain problems have caused some of its key components to be lacking, it said.

Caffeine and Octane Jacksonville: If you have a special ride and want to be front and center as the folks from NBC Sports film at least one, probably two episodes of its national Caffeine and Octane TV show. Cars should start arriving by 7 a.m., the best way in through Malabar Boulevard off of Southside Boulevard.

BMW M cars and Ford Broncos will be highlighted at the event, and showcased in a special display within the Central Lot. So everyone parked there is asked to stay put until 11 a.m. for the filming (no leaving early/no exceptions), to make this the best C and O Jacksonville this year! Ponte Vedra Auto Show: The 2021 Ponte Vedra Auto Show returns on Sunday under the direction of Justin Felker and Art ‘n Motion. And this year, it adds a first-time A1A Cruise the night before on the same site as the auto show the next day.

The A1A Cruise runs from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the event field at 245 Nocatee Center Way in Ponte Vedra Beach, and it is free and open to any classic or modern sports car, motorcycle or specialty/exotic.

Then from 10 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. Sunday, the Ponte Vedra Auto Show is presented by Art ‘n Motion in association with the St. Johns County Chamber of Commerce and the St. Johns County Tourism Development Council at the same grass field. The show is free for spectators. Event parking is also free. All of the show spots are filled, so only pre- registered cars will be allowed at Sunday’s show.

When the World Wide Historic Motoring Awards presented by Octane Magazine in London are announced next week in London, one Jacksonville man and Northeast Florida’s world-class concours d’elegance are up for separate nominations.

In the Best Concours in the World nomination, the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance is one of five events on the list. It won twice in 2015 and 2017. The other nominees are: The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering, Salon Privé and Sydney Harbour Concours d’Elegance. Then Bill Warner, founder of The Amelia, is a nominee in the Personal Achievement category, along with Andrew and David Bagley, Henry Pearman, Paul Michaels and Phillip Sarofim.

The winners will be announced on Nov. 18 at the Rosewood Hotel in London,

Motorsports events:

Off-Road United Foundation seventh annual Krawl’n For The Fallen: Saturday and Sunday at the Florida International Rally & Motorsports Park (F.I.R.M) at 7266 Airport Road in Starke. The nonprofit Off-Road United Foundation supports law enforcement, fire fighters, EMS, service members, linemen and tow truck drivers. Krawl’n For The Fallen was started in 2015 to give back to Concerns Of Police Survivors National and support survivor retreats and kids camps. It has set a minimum donation goal of $80,000 to C.O.P.S each year.

This year’s event expects 2,000 attendees, 1,000 Jeeps and 12 local/state and federal law enforcement agencies.

Gates open at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, with opening ceremonies, open trails, K9 demos, a 5K Running 4 Heroes and more. There’s a Saturday night ride to honor those who have been lost from the year. For information, registration and ticket prices, go to bit.ly/3oEPDEK.

Duval Dirt Dash: Saturday and Sunday at Jacksonville International Raceway at 8781 U.S. 301 S. in Jacksonville. The raceway and Deaf Duck Racing hosting a minibike race – endurance, flat track oval, roval, and dirt drags. A $20 gate fee includes camping for the weekend. There’s a $30 race fee. Rodeheaver Boys Ranch Classic Car Show: 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the ranch at 380 Boys Ranch Road in Palatka. Ponte Vedra Auto Show: The 2021 Ponte Vedra Auto Show returns on Sunday, Nov. 14, under the direction of Justin Felker and Art ‘n Motion. And this year, it adds a first-time A1A Cruise the night before on the same site as the auto show the next day.

The A1A Cruise runs from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 13, at the event field at 245 Nocatee Center Way in Ponte Vedra Beach, and it is free and open to any classic or modern sports car, motorcycle or specialty/exotic.

Here’s last year’s Best of Show Classic – Andre Desmarais’ 1966 Ford GT P/1043 — which also won the Spirit of Racing award, with head judge Jake Weisman and Art ‘n Motion president Justin Felker.

Then from 10 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. that Sunday, the Ponte Vedra Auto Show is presented by Art ‘n Motion in association with the St. Johns County Chamber of Commerce and the St. Johns County Tourism Development Council at the same grass field. National Council on Corvette Clubs Florida Region Autocross: 7:30 a.m. Sunday at St. Marys Airport, 400 N. Dandy St. in St. Marys, Ga. Registration and tech inspection is at 7:30 a.m., followed by a driver meeting – First car out at 9:30 a.m. This is a closed exhaust event with 7 low-speed events, helmets required (Snell SA or M and less than 10-years old). Off-Road United Foundation seventh annual Krawl’n For The Fallen: November 12th to the 14th at the Florida International Rally & Motorsports Park (F.I.R.M) at 7266 Airport Road in Starke. The nonprofit Off-Road United Foundation supports law enforcement, fire fighters, EMS, service members, line-men and tow truck drivers. Krawl’n For The Fallen was started in 2015 to give back to Concerns Of Police Survivors National and support survivor retreats and kids camps. It has set a minimum donation goal of $80,000 to C.O.P.S each year.

This year’s event expects 2,000 attendees, 1,000 Jeeps and 12 local/state and federal law enforcement agencies.

Gates open at noon on Friday Nov. 12, with a nighttime concert planned for those camping on property. Gates open at 8:30 a.m. on Sat. Finally…

We couldn’t resist – Hot Wheels has a new Batmobile from the upcoming 2022 release of “The Batman,” produced by DC Films, 6th & Idaho Motion Picture Company and Dylan Clark Productions. The Hot Wheels R/C design team created a detailed 1:10-scale movie prop with battle damage and dirt, as well as a full interior with detailed wires and gauges. There’s an animatronic Batman figure that moves the steering wheel and shifts according to the driver’s R/C inputs. And it spits “smoke” from its rear exhaust.

The Batman R/C car has a street-grade suspension, multi-color LED lights, turbo-engine sound and flame FX on both the front and rear. Not released yet, it will be almost 20 inches long, hit speeds of 15 mph, and retail for $500, Hot Wheels/Mattel says. And the owner who displays the oldest VW gets a Caffeine and Octane hat.

Special cruise to honor Nassau County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Joshua Moyers

The Callahan Cruisers will hold a classic car cruise on Saturday in support of Deputy Moyers and his family. The deputy was shot on Sept. 24 during a traffic stop and died two days later. The cruise begins at 2 p.m. at the Target at 463737 Florida 200 in Yulee, then drives to the Hardee’s restaurant at 542309 U.S. 1 in Callahan where the group’s monthly cruise-in takes place. Donations collected at the event will go directly to his family.

Cruisin’ to the Creek 2021: The First Coast Car Council’s annual show was held last Saturday at Trout Creek Memorial Park and Marina at 6550 Florida 13 North in Northwest St. Johns County, with 340 classics, hot rods, British roadsters, Miatas and everything else possible on four wheels.

5th Annual Mopars on the Beach: A Myrtle Beach “Vacation for Mopar Enthusiasts”

Erik Azar is a motorsports enthusiast living in Northeast Florida. He is presently the VP of the Jacksonville Corvette Club and an active member of JAMS – Jacksonville Area Mopars where he enjoys attending motorsport events in his Jeep JK and Dodge Challenger Hellcat Redeye.

The 5th annual Mopars on the Beach in Myrtle Beach, SC – tailored as a Vacation for Mopar Enthusiasts took place from November 10-15, 2020. Like so many other motorsport events this year, Mopars on the Beach was postponed from its usual June timeframe. 

Mopars on the Beach was founded in 2016 by Tommy and Cathy Bridges of the Coastal Carolina Mopars, and with the help of their club members pulled off a successful event as they had to be agile and creative dealing with the current Covid-19 climate. This year saw over 300 attendees from 17 states traveling from as far away as Nevada and Arizona.

The week’s activities consisted of various Cruise-ins, Dyno Day, Charity Ride, and a Car Show. It’s a great way for Mopar enthusiasts to meet other like-minded people from all over the United States and develop new friendships.

This year even the late season Hurricane Iota wouldn’t put a damper on the activities and fun. The rain stopped Thursday evening allowing Friday’s Charity Ride and Saturday’s car show to take place with beautiful weather. 

Friday’s charity ride to the small town of Georgetown, SC ended up having more than double the number of attendees expected. The organizers did an excellent job coordinating with the local police departments to arrange police escorts and blocking major intersections for more than 100 cars to travel from site to site. The evening ended at The Landing at the Boathouse for dinner and prizes.

The main event and largest generator of donation funds for the charities was Saturday’s car show that hosted over 300 cars on display. The cars ranged from classic 60s-70s Mopar muscle, to modern muscle and custom Mopars – which provided something for everybody to enjoy.

For 2020 the event raised $13,000 that was evenly divided between two local charities:

·      Quilts of Valor local chapter – provides volunteer handmade quilts to service members and veterans that have been touched by war.

·      Lowcountry Food Bank – provides both the education and nutritious options needed by partner agencies and schools that serve our community

Next year’s Mopars on the Beach is scheduled for Nov 2-6, 2021 and will move to Broadway at the Beach, a popular tourist destination with shopping and entertainment. There will also be Drag Strip day on Thursday, Nov 4, 2021 at Darlington Drag Strip.

Jacksonville Car Culture Jekyll Island Holiday Lights Cruise Shines Bright

Many thanks to everyone who participated in the Jacksonville Car Culture Holiday Lights Cruise on Jekyll Island. The overnight invite-only event provided a much needed break from the day-to-day routine and the often depressing reality that is 2020. Masks were required at all events and physical distancing was encouraged at all times.

We are grateful for the amazing team at The Westin Jekyll Island. Our host hotel worked diligently to help us put this wonderful event together. Whether is was hot cocoa and cookies around the courtyard fire, lining up the cruise vehicles in front of the hotel, late night drinks from the bar or a hot coffee from The Westin Cafe, the incredible hospitality, luxurious accommodations and idyllic setting were the perfect match for our exclusive event. We honestly couldn’t have asked for anything more.

VIDEO “Twice Around – The 2020 HSR Classic 24 by IMSA in 4K Hyperlapse – Daytona”

The HSR (Historic Sportscar Racing, LLC) Classic 24 Hour is a yearly event open to cars that were raced from 1960 through 2013 at Daytona. This year’s event was held November 4-7, 2020, Deremer Studios, LLC , Jacksonville Car Culture’s official photographer, was on site to capture the magic.

Despite a global pandemic, HSR put on a safe and successful Classic 24 race at the iconic Daytona International Speedway. In addition to our photography from the event, we brought along our old trusty tripod and a second camera to capture hyperlapse video of the race. Here’s the final result:
