Quick Take: 2026 Subaru Outback Premium

EV Rider reviewer Dan Scanlan takes a test drive in a 2026 Subaru Outback Premium, its seventh generation gaining a more SUV-like demeanor.

There’s boxy bumpers, a squared-off profile and serious body cladding, plus functionally blocky roof bars. It rides 8-plus inches off the ground atop chunky Dunlop Grand Trek rubber, looking capable of off-roading.

Inside, a pair of foot-wide digital screens – and a few needed buttons. Rubber floor mats to catch mud are underfoot, while you and three other adults nestle in softly supportive Star Tex pseudo-leather seats. There’s wireless Apple Car Play and Android Auto, a decent audio system, and voice command for lots of functions. Along with a big cargo area, there’s a naturally-aspirated 2.5-liter BOXER (flat) four with 180 hp, a Lineartronic CVT with 8-speed manual mode function, all-wheel-drive and an X-MODE mud and snow option – it can tackle off-road.

But wait, here’s more…

Britain-based Encor has done a carbon-fiber remastering of the iconic Lotus Esprit, 50 years after its Paris debut.

The Encor Series 1 gets modern engineering and a rebuilt 3.5-liter twin-turbo V-8, only 50 examples to be made.

The design and engineering team behind the project – drawn from experience with Lotus, Aston Martin, Koenigsegg and Skyships Automotive – had a goal to remaster it with the sensitivity, craftsmanship and capability of the present day, without disturbing the purity that made it so extraordinary in the first place.

“The S1 Esprit was forward-thinking, pure and utterly uncompromised,” says Daniel Durrant, Encor’s Head of Design and former Lead Designer at Lotus for the Emira. “To touch a shape like this is a huge responsibility. Every line we’ve refined, every decision we’ve made, is about honoring the original’s intent while letting the car perform, feel and function the way its silhouette always promised.”

The distinctive two-piece mold line of the 1970s fiberglass body is replaced by an uninterrupted autoclaved carbon-fiber shell that captures the purity of early sketches. Ultra-compact LED projectors are integrated into low-profile pop-up housings – retains the distinctive wedge front end, but with contemporary performance and a cleaner aerodynamic face.

Inspired by the original slot-mag design and the later Sport 350 five-spokes, Encor’s forged and billet-machined wheels reinterpret familiar cues with modern structural clarity and proportion.

The engine now produces approximately 400 hp, with 350 lb ft of torque, acceleration from 0-62 mph expected to take four seconds, with a top speed close to 175 mph. Suspension components are upgraded to Sport 350 specification; braking is delivered by AP Racing; steering remains hydraulically assisted rather than electric, preserving the tactile, driver-focused character fundamental to the original Esprit.

Inside, the Series 1 preserves the Esprit’s most memorable elements: the dramatically sloped dashboard; the cockpit-like wraparound instrument binnacle; the tartan accents; a floating instrument cluster machined from a single billet of aluminum and wrapped around a modern digital display. Seats are restored, re-foamed and re-trimmed. Deliveries will begin in Q2 2026.

The Amelia Concours – Three-time Indianapolis 500 winner Dario Franchitti is the 2026 honoree at the event in early March. And the concours d’elegance – the classic car gathering at the huge weekend classic car event on Amelia Island, is set for a Saturday, and not a Sunday as in past, Hagerty says.

EV Rider reviewer Dan Scanlan has the flagship SUV of the 123-year-old Cadillac brand – 17.5-feet-worth of multi-row luxury, tech and suavity.

The fifth-generation of the Escalade may not have the brand new IQ EV’s technological finesse, but it gains some of the non-ICE luxury wagon’s look inside and out, from LED light blades to a sweeping digital screen for driver – and passenger.

So read lot’s more about this, and see more interior and exterior images by EV Rider reviewer Dan Scanlan – 2025 Cadillac Escalade Combines Pace With Grace. And check out lots more views of EV, PHEV and ICE vehicles at EV Rider.

Three-time Indianapolis 500 winner Dario Franchitti is the 2026 honoree at The Amelia concours d’elegance in early March.

And the concours d’elegance – the classic car gathering at the huge weekend classic car event on Amelia Island, is set for a Saturday, and not a Sunday as in past, Hagerty says.

Franchitti won the Indy 500 in 2007, 2010 and 2012, and is also a 4-time IndyCar champion. The concours on Saturday, March 7th will see a collection of his race cars joining the annual display of 200-plus classics this year including Can-Am Racers and Corvettes.

The Amelia’s activities also include a kickoff party on March 5th, and Hagerty’s Broad Arrow Auctions on March 6th and 7th. The expanded Cars & Community show for regional cars and clubs is on March 8th.

Bill Warner, a Jacksonville businessman, car collector and magazine photographer, founded The Amelia in 1996. The automotive charity event is always held the first weekend of March at The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island and the 10th and 18th fairways of the Golf Club of Amelia Island. The event has generated more than $4 million in donations to Community Hospice & Palliative Care, Spina Bifida of Jacksonville and Shop with Cops.

GM has revealed the second in a series of three Chevrolet Corvette concept design studies.

The California Corvette concept was developed by GM’s Advanced Design studios in Pasadena, as part of a global design project. This latest concept reimagines the Corvette with a futuristic, Southern California twist and reflects GM’s deep roots in the SoCal design community.

“Our Advanced Design teams are dedicated to shaping the future, driving innovation, and exploring what’s possible,” said Bryan Nesbitt, vice president of global design. “The California Corvette concept is another example of forward-thinking design. We invited multiple GM studios to envision Corvette-inspired hypercars — the first of which was revealed by our UK studio in March. The California team has now delivered a complementary study that honors Corvette’s legendary performance, while infusing it with their own distinctive vision.”

While there is no production intent behind this design study, the Pasadena team embraced this project as a blank slate to reimagine what the Corvette could be.

“Southern California has been at the heart of automotive and design culture for a century, and GM has had a deep design presence here for nearly 40 years. We wanted to ensure that this concept was developed through that SoCal lens, but with a global and futuristic outlook. Duality of purpose is the basis of this concept’s design strategy,” said Brian Smith, design director, GM Advanced Design Pasadena. “The defining design aspect is the single-piece, front-hinged canopy than enables the entire upper shell to be removed, transforming the concept from an agile, slick sports car to a lightweight, open-air track car.”

The body structure has a tunneled underbody with lightweight carbon tub; staggered wheels – 21-inch front and 22-inch rear; and is 182.5 inches long.

The 1000 Miglia—the “most beautiful race in the world”, as Enzo Ferrari famously called it—came to a close on June 21st, after passing through some of Italy’s most picturesque towns. Maserati was one of the event’s stars, participating in the famous regularity race for classic cars with an iconic A6 GCS/53, which finished 49th overall.

The start took place on, June 17th from Brescia, where the A6 GCS/53 embarked on another adventure in the 2025 1000 Miglia historical re-enactment. Under the hood, the 2-liter inline six-cylinder engine designed by Gioachino Colombo—with a short-stroke “Superquadro” architecture, twin-ignition, and gear-driven double overhead camshafts—showcased the reliability of a classic engine that remains surprisingly relevant to this day. From Lombardy, the vehicle headed south, crossing the Po Valley before reaching Bologna. The next day it took on the Apennine crossings, including the world-renowned Raticosa and Futa passes—stretches that highlighted the vehicle’s steering precision and chassis stability. After navigating the mountainous terrain, the route gently descended into central Tuscany, with its rolling hills and historical towns, before arriving in Rome, where the second day came to a conclusion.

The vehicles reversed course the following day, heading back through central Italy along a more technical and varied route. Privately-owned and currently undergoing the Certification of Authenticity process at Maserati Classiche, this extraordinary model participated in five consecutive editions of the 1000 Miglia speed race (1953 to 1957).

Maserati also brought a new GranCabrio, a GranTurismo Trofeo and a Grecale Trofeo—creating a bridge between the brand’s past and present lineups. The three models were “dressed” in three exclusive liveries, each of which was inspired by both a classic model that played a significant role in the event’s history and a unique version of the Trident logo over the years.

The Alfa Romeo Historical Museum in Arese saw 1,300 enthusiasts, including some of the 300 official Alfa Romeo clubs from all over the world, and more than 350 cars. Designed to honor the brand’s 115-year history, the event also marked the 10th anniversary of the museum’s reopening following renovations. The program began with the Regularity Course created in collaboration with the Italian Alfa Romeo Register, culminating in a time trial on the internal track. Afterwards, the Club Meeting brought together representatives from official Alfa Romeo Clubs worldwide, providing a unique opportunity to discuss and share ideas. One of the day’s most memorable moments was the commemorative flash mob: 115 unique Alfa Romeo vehicles spelled out “Alfa Romeo 115” (see above) on the museum’s internal track, creating a symbolic and powerful image of the passion that unites Alfisti around the world.

The program concluded with a spectacular car parade led by “Tributo GTA” models, an homage to the legendary Giulia Sprint GTA, now celebrating its 60th anniversary, followed by a group toast paying tribute to the deep sense of belonging that has always driven the Alfa Romeo community.

Commemorating Alfa Romeo’s special birthday is a 115th anniversary interactive e-book, which spans the brand’s very beginning in 1910, when the first A.L.F.A., the 24 HP, was introduced, to today with vehicles such as the new 33 Stradale supercar and the Intensa series, which is available across Giulia, Stelvio and Tonale. All of this and more are detailed in the e-book, including archival photography, much of which comes from the Alfa Romeo Historical Museum in Arese, Italy

Wait, there’s more…

Legendary race car driver Jochen Mass has died at age 78: Mass was the 2014 honoree at the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance, and a fan favorite who seemed delighted to be honored by fans.

Bobby Rahal, president of the Road Racing Drivers Club, says he is “greatly saddened by the passing of my friend,” in a statement.

“He was not just a distinguished driver, but a and true sportsman, who represented so well in a sport we all love” Rahal’s statement says. “.. To say we have all lost a great friend is a monumental understatement. RIP my friend, and thank you for the memories.”

Thomas Laudenbach, Vice President of Porsche Motorsports, also issued a statement and deep history of the former factory driver, saying that they were very saddened by the news of his death.

“Jochen Mass was a driver with depth. One who could understand the car like few others” Laudenbach says. “He had an excellent feel for technology and for everything that makes a team strong. We are losing a remarkable driver and a trusted companion who was with us for many years. His legacy extends well beyond his success – it lives in memories, in stories and in his way of thinking about motorsports. Our thoughts are with his family”.

Mass was born in 1946 in Dorfen, Upper Bavaria. He completed an apprenticeship as a car mechanic, then when the regular driver at the Alfa Romeo dealer was absent due to illness in 1968, Mass stepped in and proved his talent, marking the spontaneous start of an extraordinary career. That led to being European Touring Car Champion in 1972, European runner-up in Formula 2, and 105 drives in Formula 1 – he won the Spanish Grand Prix in 1975. Then he found his true home in endurance sport – and at Porsche.

Between 1976 and 1987, he was a permanent member of the works team in the 935, 936, 956 and 962 with fellow drivers such as Jacky Ickx, celebrating consecutive victories, shaping championships

In 1992, Mass ended his active career, his record more than 400 races, 105 Grand Prix starts, 71 World Championship points, winner of the German Racing Championship, European Touring Car Champion, Porsche Cup winner, German Sports Car Champion, Le Mans winner with Sauber Mercedes.

Fans saw him driving a Mercedes-Benz 300SL in 2019 at a vintage event at Daytona.

The O’Reilly Auto Parts Sacramento Autorama closed out its 74th annual event on Sunday at Cal Expo with over 500 world-class custom vehicles, giving out more than 400 individual awards.

The show’s Custom d’Elegance award was presented to Jimmy Hervatin’s 1952 Ford F1 pickup, named “Lit Up,” based on a painting of the same name by artist Keith Weesner. Handcrafted by Hervatin, the truck was chopped six inches, sectioned and lowered on a brand-new frame. The reshaped body features custom running boards, shaved door handles and a new bed. Powered by a 1954 Oldsmobile 324, the truck is finished in a light blue pearl basecoat, tri-coat pearl white and dark red flames loaded with gold flake. Hervatin received $5,000 from ARP Fasteners.

David Maxwell was presented with the Best of the West award for his Kindig-It Design-built 1953 Corvette “TwelveAir” Concept, receiving a $12,500 prize.

The World’s Most Beautiful Lowrider award went to Eric Wisterman’s “Breaking Bad”-inspired 1962 Chevrolet Impala. The dazzling light-yellow lowrider was built was Wisterman and Jim Basgall, featuring murals depicting scenes and characters from the popular show by Albert Herrera, pinstriping by Alan Signs, a custom interior by Daniel Moreno and hydraulics by Mike Ishiki. Wisterman received a $5,000 prize presented by ARP Fasteners.

Wait, there’s more…

Wood Brothers Racing and driver Josh Berry are set to honor a landmark moment in the team’s history with a special throwback paint scheme for the upcoming Goodyear 400 at Darlington Raceway, during the Official Throwback Weekend of NASCAR.

The No. 21 Motorcraft Ford Mustang will wear a design inspired by Jim Clark’s iconic Ford-powered Lotus, which clinched victory at the 1965 Indianapolis 500 — a win significantly bolstered by the Wood Brothers’ innovative pit stop strategies.

The tribute livery was unveiled this week at The Henry Ford in Dearborn, Michigan, where Clark’s original race-winning car is exhibited.

“This was a really fun project to work on with the team, from sorting all the details to making sure it properly reflected such an important moment in history,” said Jon Wood, president of Wood Brothers Racing. “It’s always special to run a throwback, but this one carries extra meaning because of the connection our family had to that Indy 500 win. Unveiling it at The Henry Ford, right next to the original car, made it even more special. Seeing the No. 21 in those colors is a great way to honor that history, and I think it’s something fans will really appreciate.”

During a NASCAR race in the mid-1960s, Ford racing official John Cowley approached Glenn Wood with a proposition that took him by surprise—assisting with pit stops for Clark and Team Lotus in the 1965 Indianapolis 500.

“When we were asked by Ford Motor Company to pit Jim Clark’s car for the Indy 500, it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for our family,” said Leonard Wood. “We were just a group of guys from Stuart, Virginia, working on stock cars, and suddenly, we were part of something that would become a unique part of our history. To see that same scheme now on our No. 21 Ford Mustang for Throwback Weekend at Darlington is really special. It brings back a lot of memories, and it’s a great way to honor that moment.”

The 2025 NASCAR Throwback Weekend takes place April 5-6 at Darlington Raceway, with the Goodyear 400 scheduled for 3 p.m. that Sunday, April 6, on FS1.

Photo – Nissan

To honor the shared DNA of the Nissan Z and the centuries-old tradition of Japanese knifemaking, Nissan Design America collaborated with sushi master Chef Hiroyuki “Chef Hiro” Terada, and legendary knifemaker Kiryu to create the Z NISMO Precision Sushi Knife.

The Nissan Z NISMO is engineered for peak performance, says Nissan. This same pursuit of excellence is reflected in the Z NISMO Precision Sushi Knife, an 8.27-inch double-beveled blade crafted for clean, precise cuts.

“I designed this knife with an image of the Z NISMO always in my head,” said Satoshi Kiryu, principal knifemaker at Kiryu. His grandfather founded the company in 1927. “I always try to design a knife making the best use of the materials,” said Kiryu, who has been working at Kiryu for 48 years.

When Nissan began seeking a partner in the knife project, Kiryu stood out – not just for his reputation and expertise, but because of his passion for the Z-car. To him, the project is personal.

“When I was a kid, the Fairlady Z was my favorite car, especially the 240Z. It was such a cool-looking car,” he said. “Today, we have a new Z that reminds me of the first Z’s design. When Nissan approached me for this project, I was so happy.”

Priced at $300.23, the knife is sold out on the NISMO Parts website.

The12 Hours of Sebring is this weekend, and the folks at The Brumos Collection activated its wayback machine to showcase where it all began – 1952, when Brundage Motors founder Hubert Brundage raced this VW Special in the first official 12 Hours of Sebring that year. That was a year before he established his local VW and Porsche dealer on Main Street, which would later become Brumos.

Petersen Automotive Museum

Motorcycles from one of the most extensive and internationally renowned collections in the world will be on display at the Petersen Automotive Museum beginning this weekend. “The American Motorcycle: Pioneering Machines from the Bunch Family Collection” will be displayed in the Richard Varner Family Gallery, highlighting some of the rarest and most historically significant motorcycles ever produced and explore the contributions of American motorcycling pioneers.

Some of the featured motorcycles include the 1898 Cleveland Tricycle, one of America’s oldest motorized cycles from a pioneering manufacturer, featuring the first front spring fork suspension, and the 1904 Thomas Auto-Bi, created by the E.R. Thomas Company, the first motorcycle manufacturer in America to design and build its own bikes.
