Registration is open for the annual Classic Motorsports Amelia Island Kickoff presented by Sunoco: Set for Friday March 6, the day before The Amelia concours on Saturday. About 150 must-see cars, from legendary collector cars to iconic race machines, are expected starting at 1 p.m. that Friday on Fernandina Beach’s Main Beach Park, just a few miles north of the Ritz-Carlton. Spectator entry is free, while vehicle entry, limited to 150 pre-registered cars, is $45 per. All cars must preregister.—

The father of the Mazda Miata – MX-5 – has died.
Designer Tsutomu “Tom” Matano was 76 when he passed away on Sept. 20, according to Hagerty.
Matano held several design-related positions at General Motors and BMW early in his career. But he is best remembered for designing Mazda sports cars in the 1980s, including the original MX-5 Miata. Born in 1947 in Nagasaki, he studied engineering in Japan and moved to the United States in late 1969. Enrolling in the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, he worked next at GM, then BMW. His next move began his legend – Irvine, Calif., and Mazda’s North American design studio.
Ultimately moving up to Executive Designer and Director, he moved back to Japan in 1999 to work in Mazda’s headquarters, responsible for the original Miata design, as well as working on the RX-8 and some Ford product. Retiring in 2002, he remained very popular with fans, attending many Mazda and Miata events.

Farewell Legacy – Subaru has produced its last Legacy sedan, a Limited in Magnetite Gray, driven off the Indiana assembly line on Sept. 12.
“This is a bittersweet moment for our company and our associates,” said Scott Brand, Subaru Indiana president and CEO. “While an important chapter in our history has been brought to a close, we’re already turning the page and starting a new one.”
The Legacy was designed for the American market, debuting on Sept. 11, 1989, to become the first Subaru manufactured in the U.S.. The first-generation model began a new era for Subaru with a competitive midsized sedan and wagon. The Legacy Wagon eventually became the foundation for the Subaru Outback.
Since its debut, Legacy models sold in the U.S. have been assembled at SIA. In total, seven generations of the Legacy have racked up nearly 1.4 million sales in the U.S.
Though the Legacy was the longest-running Subaru model line, its discontinuation reflects market shifts from passenger cars to SUVs and crossovers—along with Subaru’s transition to electrified and fully electric vehicles. The end of Legacy production will be followed shortly by the end of U.S. production of the Outback in about three weeks.
SIA is Subaru’s only manufacturing facility outside of Japan and currently assembles about half of all Subaru vehicles sold in North America.

Three-time Indianapolis 500 winner Dario Franchitti is the 2026 honoree at The Amelia concours d’elegance in early March.
And the concours d’elegance – the classic car gathering at the huge weekend classic car event on Amelia Island, is set for a Saturday, and not a Sunday as in past, Hagerty says.
Franchitti won the Indy 500 in 2007, 2010 and 2012, and is also a 4-time IndyCar champion. The concours on Saturday, March 7th will see a collection of his race cars joining the annual display of 200-plus classics this year including Can-Am Racers and Corvettes.
