An Alfa Romeo P3 returned to the top of the podium last weekend, earning the Trofeo BMW Group – Best of Show by the Jury at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este: When awarded the prize, a representative of the Auriga Collection said his “biggest concern was stalling the car when you were talking about it, but I managed to not stall it, so everything is fine.” And victory is nothing new to the Alfa Romeo P3 – or, as the world once knew it, the Tipo B.

Designed by Vittorio Jano as the first true single-seater Grand Prix car, it redefined racing in the early 1930s with its twin-supercharged straight-eight engine and featherlight frame. In 1933, this very car became part of Scuderia Ferrari’s stable – before Enzo Ferrari was a carmaker, and still a team principal. Piloted by Achille Varzi and Guy Moll, it claimed victory at Grand Prix circuits from Tripoli to Berlin, plus Tazio Nuvolari’s 1935 Nürburgring win.

Unveiled at Villa d’Este, the BMW Concept Speedtop: reimagines the sporty Touring with the elegance of a shooting brake and unmistakably dynamic proportions. BMW says its “flowing interplay between exterior and interior is a showcase of true craftsmanship, right down to the brogue-detailed leatherwork.” Created in collaboration with Schedoni, two bespoke travel bags fit neatly behind the seats, tailored to match the car’s refined material concept. And it’s real – the BMW Concept Speedtop will be offered in only 70 units.

He was going for his fifth Indy 500 win, but ended up 9^th – now the newest member of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame is that guy – Helio Castroneves. He was inducted Monday night in a ceremony hosted by the IMS Museum in front of family, friends, team members and fans.

Call it a blank slate – the Slate Truck, that is – a compact, bare-bones electric pickup that base prices at just under $27,500, or even down as low as $20,000 with federal tax credits. Designed in California, built in the Midwest and backed by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, its makers call it “a beautifully simplified EV 2-seat pickup, produced in a single configuration from the factory.”

It’s basic – steel wheels outside; crank windows and HVAC knobs inside, with a large frunk along with a 1,400-lb. payload. There’s more than 100 accessories, including a flat-pack accessory SUV Kit that turns the truck into a 5 seat SUV, with a roll cage, airbags and rear seat.

The interior is simple – digital gauge, USB ports and a place to add your smartphone or tablet to get other stuff you want, Slate says. There’s a 52.7-kWh battery pack, 150 kW, rear-wheel drive, and a base range target of 150 miles – an accessory 84.3-kWh pack has a target of 240 miles. Using the NACS port, charge overnight for commute on a household outlet, or fast-charge to 80% at 120-kW in under 30 minutes.

Porsche celebrated an anniversary this week – On April 28, 1975, a one-off Porsche 917 race car left the Weissach development center and headed not for a track – like every 917 before – but instead, and for the first time, to public roads.

It was an audacious adventure driven by the passion of private owner/Italian businessman Gregorio Rossi di Montelera, as a small team within Porsche fulfilled his wishes.

The car – 917 chassis 30 – had originally raced. But this silver car had an array of changes mandated by the laws of the time, or  others at the request of Count Rossi.

Finished in Martini Silver, it featured a set of rudimentary exhaust mufflers, additional mirrors, side indicators and even a horn. It carried the mandatory spare tire beneath its rear clamshell. Inside, the two seats (a requirement for endurance racers of this period) re-finished in tan leather (commissioned from Hermes) with accompanying suede surfacers for the roof lining, doors and dashboard. The gear shifter retained the same wooden finish as the racers, and even kept the same drilled, lightweight key. The car originally wore an Alabama license plate obtained by Count Rossi.
